USCIS to Provide $10M Grants to Citizenship Prep Programs

Are you planning to naturalize soon? The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has a new initiative to make citizenship more attainable to everyone and all communities.

That is great news for green card holders! On May 17, 2021, they announced $10 million would support programs that directly help immigrants prepare for the citizenship test.

Citizenship Test Explained
The citizenship exam is given verbally during the naturalization interview and has two components:

  • The first tests for English proficiency
  • The second will evaluate the applicant’s knowledge of U.S. history.

The weight of your citizenship relies on this test. The best thing to do is start early. Begin familiarizing yourself with questions and answers. With ample preparation, studying, and practice tests, you will be able to pass with ease, especially now that the USCIS is making more tools available to support immigrants on their journey.

These Efforts Are a Big Deal
The Citizenship and Integration Grant Program will award grants to public and non-profit organizations. They will directly finance naturalization instruction outside of the legal assistance you pursue from a Los Angeles citizenship lawyer.

Recipients will get an instructor who can help them speak, talk, and read English. They will also teach them the foundation of U.S. history and the government to pass the civics exam.

Many immigrants living in low-income communities seldom get the tools needed to pass successfully and become U.S. citizens. This grant directly targets them. Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, shared insight with Boundless.

“It is critical that we provide immigrants pursuing citizenship and the organizations who help support their efforts with the tools to be successful,” Mayorkas said.

“The Citizenship and Integration Grant Program helps those preparing to become U.S. citizens to integrate into American society.

This administration recognizes that naturalization is an important milestone in the civic integration of immigrants, and we will continue to provide support for individuals hoping to establish new citizenship in our country.”

The USCIS will announce recipients later this year in September. So far, the agency has awarded nearly $100 million in grants since 2009 to organizations.
