After more than a year of navigating through the pandemic, job growth has boomed last month, indicating the economy is on a road to recovery. Tech companies in California are looking to hire and urge President Biden to act quickly.
Silicon Valley Companies Plan on Increasing Job Opportunities
Although plans are in motion and changes have been made regarding immigration, the Biden administration still has a lot of work to do regarding visas. Not only is the U.S. trying to manage with a backlog of more than 1 million cases, but the government is also reforming policies that impact how quickly an immigrant can start their new life in the U.S.
In the Trump administration the laws-imposed changes that limited visas, extended application periods, and denied citizenship statuses. Many are expecting Biden to rebuild agencies to help manage and regulate new changes between the State Department and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
A legal representative for tech entrepreneurs, scientists and investors told NBC news that the immigration policy is affecting companies, the economy and prospective employees. “Change is not happening fast enough under the Biden administration, and it is critical that it does,” said Ashima Duggal, an immigration lawyer in Los Angeles.
The tech industry is one of few that can adapt to hiring a higher percentage of new talent and skilled workers from outside of the U.S. The data speaks for itself – more than half of tech workers were born abroad according to NBC.
“These individuals who are applying are scientists, are artists, are Grammy winners, and they’re clearly qualified under the requirements, and they’re being either denied or having to jump through hoops and hurdles to prove their case,” Duggal told NBC. She hopes there is a significant change soon, especially for EB-1/H-1B visa applicants.
